How to be a respectful guest during your Cornwall stay

Date Posted: 15 Sep 2023

If you’re planning to book a holiday stay in Cornwall, you may be wondering what sort of accommodation will suit you. Choosing a self-catering property provides you with much more flexibility, making it an appealing choice for families, larger groups and those that want more of a home-from-home experience.

While holiday cottages in Cornwall are certainly more laidback, there are some house rules that you should bear in mind to ensure happy holidays all round. Here we list some important house rules when staying at one of Cornish Secrets holiday cottages.

Booking your Cornwall cottage

When you book your holiday cottage you’ll be asked to provide all details of your party members, including any children’s ages. That way we can ensure any highchairs or cots are ready for your arrival. Please fill these details in correctly, so that we know who will be staying at the property. If you wish to amend or add guests, then let the team know so that we can update the details on your booking. Having extra guests stay at the property is not permitted.

Your damage deposit

Each property requires a refundable damage deposit, at Cornish Secrets lager holiday cottages are £500, and smaller properties are £200. This will be held until the end of the occupancy and will be returned to the guest within two weeks of departure, subject to deductions for any damage to property caused during the occupancy.

It’s always appreciated that any breakages that happen during your stay are highlighted before check out, so that we can ensure the correct replacements are made for the remainder of your stay and for the next holiday cottage booking.

If you break a glass or any dishes, please wrap these up separately before disposing in the bin. Help us to avoid another accident, as the rubbish is sorted by hand and so sharp, broken glass or ceramics is a real danger to our bin men.

Check-in times and changeover

Check-in times vary with each property, and you’ll receive your check-in time when you book your cottage. In most cases it’s not possible for guests to check in early, so please do not arrive before the designated time as our cleaners will be working hard to make sure your property is perfect for your arrival.

This also means that leaving your car at the property is not possible before the check-in time. You may also want to drop your luggage at your Cornwall cottage before the designated check-in time, guests should always ask beforehand as a courtesy, and if it is possible we will do our best to accommodate.

Changeover days are often Fridays or Saturdays for week-long holidays in a Cornwall cottage, however if you want to look at alternatives ask the question, some properties can be flexible particularly out of peak season.

When you arrive at your Cornish Secrets holiday cottage

We want your stay to be a fabulous experience so if you notice any damage, or if there are any issues that you’re not happy with during your stay, please contact the owner or housekeeper straight away. Every effort will be made to remedy your concerns immediately, but we will be unable to resolve an issue if we have not informed. We are unable to accept any responsibility for any problems notified after departure. If, after leaving the property, you feel that your complaint was not resolved to your satisfaction, please ensure that you contact the owner in writing within seven days.

Bringing your dog on holiday

We have a selection of dog friendly cottages in Cornwall. How many dogs depends on the cottage, and there is a small fee to add your dog to your holiday booking at £35-£50 per dog, per week.

Guests should notify management of the breed of dog(s) before booking, as this may impact cleaning time for the property.

House rules for dog owners and their dogs

  • Please do not leave dogs alone in the property at any time.
  • Please do not allow dogs on to any of the furniture or soft furnishings – cushions and throws etc.
  • Please do not allow dogs upstairs or into the bedrooms, and bring your own pet beds/baskets and blankets.
  • Dogs should be cleaned and fully dried off before entering the property after being outside.
  • On departure, please check all outside areas, gardens, patios, balconies and courtyards thoroughly to ensure that all dog mess has been picked up/bagged and disposed of.
Hot tub cottages

If you are staying in a cottage with a hot tub, there are a few extra rules to abide by. Please familiarise yourself with the instructions in the manual folder located inside the property.

  • Please keep the hot tub cover in place when not using the hot tub and care must be taken moving it.
  • Always shower before entering the hot tub to remove sand.
  • No children under 12 years.
  • Hot tub users under 18 must be always accompanied/supervised by an adult.
  • No glass or sharp objects in the hot tub area.
  • Recommend sessions limited to 15 minutes.
  • Do not bathe after a heavy meal.
  • Do not use the hot tub under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • If you are receiving medical treatment or have a long-term illness, consult your doctor before use of the hot tub.
  • Please do not use hot tub after 10pm as there are neighbours to consider.
Treat your Cornwall cottage like your home

We ask guest to be mindful of their energy consumption, do not leave taps running or lights left on. Your holiday cottage will not be cleaned during your stay, unless pre-arranged, so please respect the space.

Respect the neighbours

While we appreciate guests wanting to enjoy their time on holiday, we ask that you respect the wellbeing of neighbours and not to cause any annoyance or become a nuisance. Complaints from adjoining or nearby occupants to Cornish Secrets properties regarding negative behaviour may result in guests being asked to leave the property immediately, without a refund.

When departing your holiday cottage

Please vacate the property by 10am. We kindly request you close the windows, leave internal doors open and switch off the lights. Finally, after making sure that all external doors are secure, please return the set of keys to the key safe outside.  Close the key box and replace its waterproof cover at all times and change the numbers. On departure, please ensure the house is locked up securely and any side gates are locked and that the keys are returned to the key-box.

Check for any left belongings

On departure please check that you have packed all of your belongings before it’s too late.  We can return forgotten items to you, but this will incur a handling fee of £15 plus p&p and would prefer you left with all of your belongings.
