Choosing your accommodation in Cornwall: cottage vs hotel stay

Choosing your accommodation in Cornwall: cottage vs hotel stay

Date Posted: 18 Sep 2023

As with any holiday, you’ve probably found yourself weighing up whether to stay in a hotel or self-catering cottage. With pros and cons to both, we look into the options for your next getaway in Cornwall.

Choosing a Cornwall hotel

Cornwall has some wonderful hotels in amazing locations. Whether you’re looking for a luxury beachfront resort, somewhere your dog can come too, or a place where the kids are just as welcome as the adults, the hotel scene here is very accommodating here.

The locations of some of Cornwall’s hotels are unrivalled, with the most exclusive having their own private coves or are just steps away from beach. You of course have the luxury of having most things at your fingertips too, from meals in the hotel’s restaurant to swimming pool facilities and designated car parks.

If you’re after a particular style of holiday, perhaps a golf break or wellness retreat, hotels with spas or golf courses naturally have everything you need on site and avoid extra travelling. The other luxury that hotels offer is that you don’t have to lift a finger, with all the daily cleaning taken care of.

By opting for a hotel you’re also more likely to secure a short break in peak season, whereas self-catering cottages in Cornwall are often only available for week-long stays in the summer.

Choosing a Cornwall cottage

The most obvious one when it comes to opting for a cottage in Cornwall is space, from having your own garden or terrace area to having plenty of bedrooms to sleep everyone. As well as space, storage is a big one for guests. Having room to store surfboards, wetsuits and other beach paraphernalia does make holiday life easier.

While there are dog-friendly hotels in Cornwall, we appreciate that some dog owners want their own space. Dog-friendly cottages allow for more freedom, with their own outdoor space, showers and outside taps to rinse off a day at the beach, and cosy log burners for four-legged friends to curl up in front of.

Luxury cottages in Cornwall have hotel-quality facilities too. Whether you’re looking for a Cornwall cottage with a hot tub, an at-home cinema, your own swimming pool, or perhaps a sauna or steam room, the facilities on tap in luxury properties are truly impressive.

While there may not be a hotel bar or restaurant, if you want a cooking experience to remember why not book a private chef for your Cornwall cottage? They’ll even do the washing up.

Another big positive for self-catering holidays in Cornwall is cost. It’s likely that the price per night is more cost effective than a hotel stay, particularly if you’re splitting the price with another family.
