An impressive former rectory, set in beautiful gardens offering a tranquil retreat
Nestled in the quiet hamlet of Launcells, just three miles inland from the coastal town of Bude, Ravenscourt is a rather exceptional property. Tucked away off a quiet country road, Ravenscourt’s beauty is apparent from first glance, with its striking entrance and gravelled driveway. A grand, Grade II listed building, draped with pretty wisteria, stands tall amidst the immaculate gardens which wrap around the house.
Decadence reigns at Ravenscourt, from the five well-appointed bedrooms on offer, to the expansive secluded grounds. As a former rectory, this property is full of quintessential country charm.
Having undergone a graceful reformation in spring 2023 using a local interior designer, Ravenscourt beautifully blends opulence and grandeur with rich textures, bold wallpapers and warm tones while celebrating the natural light that this house is blessed with, making staying here a complete pleasure.
Upon entering Ravenscourt, you’ll be drawn to the magnificent central staircase, which leads to the first floor via a half landing with picture window, but there’s splendour at every turn. The lounge, with a south-facing position at the front of the house with its large Georgian sash windows, features luxurious sinkable Loaf sofas, a cosy woodburning stove and smartTV. Step into the kitchen, which has two offshoots for places to relax or dine. The kitchen itself is well-equipped with high specification appliances such as the Miele integrated ovens and Illy coffee machine.
The garden room, which is adjacent to the kitchen, with French doors opening onto the gardens, is another highlight here. There’s a large wooden table, with 10 plush chairs to provide plenty of space to enjoy a Cornish banquet.
Tucked away at the back of the house there’s a relaxed snug, generous utility space, office room, WC, and boot and coat storage, with a stable door leading out to the rear gardens. There’s also a generously-sized bedroom on this floor, with zip ‘n’ link beds which can be arranged as a twin or king, which has the luxury of its own ensuite with double walk-in shower, plus a wall-mounted smartTV.
The majestic galleried landing on the first floor provides access to four bedrooms, and a family bathroom. The master bedroom, which is a king in size, positioned at the front of the house has its own shower room ensuite, an abundance of built-in storage and an original decorative fireplace.
There are three further bedrooms upstairs; a zip ‘n’ link twin and double, both at the front of the house, while an additional king-size bedroom is situated at the back of the house benefiting from dual aspect windows to allow for plenty of natural light.
Naturally, a house as imposing as Ravenscourt has impressive grounds to match. Just shy of acre, immaculate gardens envelop this property providing a total sense of seclusion. There are plenty of garden games to be enjoyed on the lawn, a bespoke clay pizza oven and Norfolk Grills BBQ for some alfresco dining, and outdoor furniture to allow guests to kick back and soak up the Cornish sun. There’s also a fenced relaxation area where a previous pond has been brought back to life with luscious shrubs, the original vicar’s toilet, while use is prohibited it gives a nod to what life at Ravenscourt was like all those years ago.

Ravenscourt is just three miles inland from Bude, sitting on the North Cornwall and Devon border and offering a traditional beachside holiday for couples and families alike. You also have the former market town of Stratton, just 1.5 miles away where there’s a post office, Church and two pubs and can be reached by a public footpath via Launcells Church.
There are two sandy beaches located in Bude itself, Summerleaze Beach and Crooklets Beach. Both have beach huts available for hire and overlooking Summerleaze Beach is the Bude Sea Pool, which is a free tidal swimming pool that is run and maintained by a team of volunteers (so donations are welcomed). Other beaches only a couple of miles away are Widemouth Bay, Northcott Mouth and Sandymouth Beach, all of which showcase dramatic scenery.
There are a variety of cafes and bars if you are looking to eat out, from The Barge (a floating cafe on Bude’s canal) to Elements at The beach that serves fine dining and cocktails with fantastic views out to sea.
If you are seeking an active holiday, then Bude has a number of surf, paddleboard and adventure activity schools to help you have fun, whilst staying safe. Bude’s beaches are favoured with surfers, kite surfers and paddle boarders. There are surf hire huts too, for those who are just ‘trying it out’.
The Bude canal has fun for all the family with pedal boats and rowing boats for hire, followed by a spot of shopping on the canal side at The Wharf, where you will find many local artisan items for sale. Throughout summer, there is also the Bude Farmers Market held each Friday and you can also find a proper Cornish ice-cream here to cool down with.
Widemouth Bay sits just a couple of miles south of Bude and while it benefits from all the Bude has to offer, is a slightly quieter setting. It is a beachside village dotted with cafes and bars, plus everything you need for a great day at the beach. Surf hire and surf schools are available and there is a very chilled out feeling to this area.
Bude and Widemouth Bay are close to the A39, which makes it easy to explore the North Cornwall and Devon coastline. Only a short drive away are the historic villages of Tintagel and Boscastle, steeped in legends and folklore. Padstow is also only an hours drive from Bude, and is favoured among foodies with many talented chefs serving up fresh local food.
