About the cottage
About Libertine
This uniquely opulent property, built in 1603 in the village of Breage (pronounced Breeg) books quickly, and you can see why. It is a very rare find, oozing character and style.
Libertine, previously an old vicarage hall, affords its guests utter privacy, yet is only a few minutes’ drive from both delightful Praa Sands and the fabulously photogenic Porthleven. Boho artisan, with a Gothic atmosphere and church artefacts, it is lovingly filled with a wonderful mixture of items gathered from travels around the globe.
If you love the creative aesthetic and beautiful spaces, then Libertine, with its layered fabrics, patterning and eclectic décor, is just right for you.
Downstairs, the sitting room boasts a huge fireplace, a feature believed to be medieval, big enough for a banquet to be prepared in days of old. It features a vast wood burning stove which belts out heat, perfect for winter breaks.
The current owners, themselves artists, bought the property in 2014, to restore it to its former glory. It has taken local craftsmen six years to expose the granite walls and make it an impressive, yet peaceful retreat. Inside feels like an explorer’s home, with its diversely stylish collection of artefacts from around the globe, its very own Bohemia. The house feels lavish, yet very much lived in, with a strong sense of history.
In the dining room, which comfortably seats up to ten at the antique polished walnut dining table, is another authentic period piece, a medieval stone arch. There is also a bar cabinet and a chandelier transporting you to a world of lavish abundance. Meanwhile, the beamed snug has a Romantic large Indian antique opium bed and wood burning fire.
The kitchen, a chef’s dream, is the most modern part of the house, as you might expect, fitted with high spec, streamlined Smeg and Gaggenhau equipment, enough to cater for every need. There is also a boiling hot water tap for instant hot drinks.
Sleeping eight or more, the bedrooms include one super king size, three doubles. Every double bedroom has its own an ensuite bathroom. A freestanding bath is available in the swoonworthy master ensuite, while other bathrooms have showers. The master suite also accommodates Playstation and gym equipment, alongside a large reproduction oil painting, and a bed originally bought by Sean Connery for his wife. Two of the guest rooms have antique beds, one believed to have originally come from the Palace of Versailles.
Of course, with superfast broadband to the property, entertainment is also provided, in the shape of Alexa Echo Dot, a 65-inch curved LED TV with Sky, including movies and sport, Netflix and Amazon Prime, a Sonos ‘surround sound’ home sound system (both indoors and outside), a TV lift in the master suite – and even a good range of perfectly shelved books for more traditional entertainment.
You will also find beautiful gardens, a heated outside pool with jacuzzi area, and a built-in barbecue and fire pit, for fabulous evenings watching the sun go down. With no expense spared, the owners have thought of everything you could possibly need in this bewitchingly exotic property.
Please note: December 2026 there will be a newly installed Games Room at Libertine, featuring a pool table, table tennis and darts board.
Facilities
High-quality bed linen and towels are provided at all of Cornish Secrets properties.
Where a cot is supplied, guests are kindly asked to bring their own cot bedding.
- Large lounge/dining area seating 10/12 with huge stone fireplace and wood burning fire, plus 65-inch curved LED TV with Sky, Netflix and Amazon Prime,, two sofas.
- Kitchen with SMEG appliances, Gaggenau induction hobs, Teppenyaki plate, boiling hot water tap, L'Or Piano coffee machine (a selection of pods provided), charcoal grill, wine cooler, and wall-mounted smart TV.
- Snug with large Indian antique bed, wood burning fire, and a Sonos home sound system.
- Utility space with washer and dryer, a downstairs WC.
- A study with 60-inch television, plus Playstation and Xbox games consoles, which can be used as another accessible bedroom with z bed if required.
- Master bedroom suite with super-king bed, TV with Playstation, inset fire, a freestanding bath and ensuite.
- Bedroom two is a double, with storage and ensuite shower room.
- Bedroom three is a double, with storage and ensuite shower room.
- Bedroom four is a double, with storage and ensuite shower room.
- Gym with bike, cross trainer, yoga mat, free weights, massage table, and wall mounted TV.
- The pool area comprises of a heated outdoor pool with jacuzzi area, decked out with sun loungers and Indian day bed, a fire pit and built-in barbecue. This area is beautifully lit up at night
- Separate garden area with seating and chiminea fire
- A further garden area at the rear of the house, featuring a dovecote wall which has homed nesting birds for centuries

Breage is a charming, traditional Cornish village with a wonderfully peaceful, rural atmosphere—perfect for slowing down between days of exploring. It has that classic village feel, while still being well placed for easy trips to the coast, countryside walks and some of Cornwall’s most-loved days out.
Foodies should make time for nearby Porthleven, which is renowned for its vibrant dining scene and hosts a popular food festival each spring. Chef Jude Kereama’s much-loved restaurants, Kota and Kota Kai, are firm favourites, serving beautifully crafted dishes with Asian-inspired flavours.
Beach days fit effortlessly into a stay here. Praa Sands is a family favourite, thanks to its long sweep of golden sand—ideal for swimming, paddling and classic bucket-and-spade fun. Along the same stretch of coast, Marazion Beach is a particularly scenic option, with standout views across the bay to St Michael’s Mount. If you’re travelling with a dog, Prussia Cove is a great year-round choice.
St Michael’s Mount is another must-see. This iconic tidal island is home to a historic castle and gardens, and at low tide you can walk across the causeway to explore. When the tide returns, ferries run between the island and mainland, and there are cafés on site if you fancy a bite to eat.
When it’s time to refuel near the beach, The Welloe at Praa Sands is a great shout for relaxed food and drinks in an easy-going setting.
If you’re after a bigger day out, there’s plenty within reach: browse the shops and galleries in St Ives, visit the seals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, catch a performance at the spectacular Minack Theatre, explore the historic Godolphin Estate, or even plan a day trip to the Isles of Scilly by ferry or helicopter.

As soon as we set foot through the front door I was taken back in time to a magical dream. We spent 2 amazing weeks at Libertine and it wasn't enough. The swimming pool was devine and the BBQ area was set in a beautiful garden with the peaceful noise of a running waterfall. There’s a wonderful vibe throughout Libertine — calming, inspiring, and just a little bit magical. This holiday home is unlike anywhere we’ve ever stayed, perfect location. Outside, the grounds are just as enchanting. The house managers were excellent — we will be back!
We were completely blown away by the uniqueness and just how special this place is. Everywhere you look there are amazing pieces of art and curios, the whole place really is a visual delight and creatively put together. We all adored the pool, the surroundings and the peacefulness. The space was amazing and you could always find a quiet corner, away from everyone else, if needed. The caretakers were extremely helpful and could not have done more to help whilst we were there. We highly recommend to anyone who will really enjoy and appreciate a more gothic, creative, unique space – we loved it and we will be returning.
Cornish Secrets was always there to answer any questions we had and the owner was so calm and helpful, throughout our stay. The building was amazing as were the rooms, never quite seen anything like it before!
As soon as we stepped foot into the house you are met with the most beautiful artwork and artefacts from all over the world which each take you on a journey with a brilliant story to go along with them. We were also greeted to the warmness of the beautiful fireplaces it was like entering into a warm hug! When we arrived we were greeted by Dom who was so friendly and helpful with anything we needed, this made our stay that much more special. Libertine is a zen haven and we will most definitely be back!
Libertine made us decide to holiday in Cornwall, and Libertine is the reason we will go back. The location is perfect with short drives to the Lizard, Kynance Cove, St Michael’s Mount, St Ives and beyond, but from the moment we stepped in the door to roaring log fires, candlelit rooms, the pool heated and ready, and a wonderful welcome pack, we hardly wanted to go out anyway. The house and gardens are stunning, and the interior décor and furnishings are unique, fascinating and super-comfortable. Layer on top of that the high quality appliances, the gym and the entertainment systems.
We had a lovely week staying at Libertine in Breage in June. A very comfortable house and everyone thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Our weather was beautiful which enabled us to make good use of the swimming pool too. Many thanks to Sarah at Cornish Secrets for all her help.
The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming upon arrival as we did turn up slightly earlier than planned! Throughout our stay they were attentive with regards to any maintenance or upkeep. The heated pool was a nice treat for the family too! The location was fantastic, being in easy reach of several popular coastlines. I will definitely be booking my next stay in Cornwall with Cornish Secrets!
