Charming Victorian house near Newlyn
Welcome to The Bowery, a terraced Victorian house, situated near the pretty fishing village of Newlyn. Part of the original working farmhouse, over the years the house has been sensitively extended in two stages, the most recent part being The Bowery.
A truly special property, there’s many reasons to fall in love with this home. With a keen eye for detail, this property has been styled to a sensational standard. Showcasing the Victorian era, expect opulent arched entrances, stained glass windows and embellished ceilings. There’s even a covered veranda with an original tiled Victorian floor at the front of the house, overlooking the garden.
Sleeping six across two floors, The Bowery is a gorgeous space for your Cornish getaway just 800m from Newlyn village. The ground floor, with its high ceilings is bright and spacious. The bespoke kitchen is well-equipped with high specification appliances with a Rangemaster range cooker at the helm, and features a considerable island; the dining table – which comfortably seats six – is flooded with light from the deep windows.
The living room is an elegant yet tranquil space, boasting a large wall-mounted LG OLED SmartTV for all your telly needs and a log burner for cosy nights in. Seating is more than taken care of with a sumptuous sofa, two plush armchairs, a further two Scandi-inspired chairs and a day bed with plenty of blankets and throws. French doors lead to the charming veranda and through to the impressive grounds.
Follow the striking original staircase to the sleeping quarters, which comprises of two king-size rooms and a children’s bedroom with bunk beds. With wooden flooring throughout, the first bedroom features a charming wood-burning stove and fireplace, while the second bedroom is an interior designer’s dream – complete with an exceptional open-plan wet room with separate WC. The ultra-contemporary family bathroom is also on this floor. The glistening white room with bold grey modern floor tiling, exudes space and style, with a freestanding bath and separate shower.
The Bowery’s outdoor space is equally impressive with an array of fantastic flora. The aforementioned veranda, which looks onto the garden is a wonderful spot for your morning coffee or an alfresco lunch. There’s also an additional casual dining terrace to the side of the house, conveniently located next to the BBQ. The pond is to be admired from a distance (please refrain from standing/playing in the pond), and there is an impressive ruin of a Victorian green house in the garden, but again children should be supervised at all times.
With private parking for three cars, you’re well placed to explore the very best of West Cornwall with Porthcurno, the Minack Theatre and Land’s End close by.

The Bowery is just 800m from Newlyn’s fishing harbour, which is wonderful for art lovers and foodies alike. Visit the renowned Newlyn Art Gallery, for the light here is an artist’s dream. This gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west for more than 125 years. Presenting contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a supporting programme of events for all ages. The Exchange is its sister site, which is a contemporary arts space with glass running the length of its façade is also worthy of your attention.
If finding a good restaurant is more your thing, Newlyn delivers on this front too. Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar is open from 12-9 pm every day, while it doesn’t take bookings we believe it’s well worth queuing for. The tasting plates are great for lunchtime grazing, and as to be expected there’s a big fish focus. Ben Tunnicliffe took over The Tolcarne Inn in 2012 and is known as a bit of a champion when it comes to Cornwall’s food scene since settling here in 2001. For a traditional village pub, it’s hard to beat. The chalkboard-style menu heavily favours the sea, with mackerel, scallops, crab, mussels, bass and bream often featured. Or if you’ve a sweet tooth, Mr Porter’s journal named Jelberts the best ice cream in England. This rather unassuming ice cream shop offers just one flavour… vanilla. Make sure you get clotted cream on top.
Penzance is two miles away, walk along the promenade and head for the famous Jubilee Pool, the UK’s largest art deco seawater lido. It’s also an easy walk to the village of Paul and Mousehole. Or there’s always the open-top Land’s End Coaster bus route. The Bowery is a 15 minute drive away from Marazion and St Michael’s Mount and a 20 minute drive to Hayle with beaches such as Gwithian and Godrevy.

We very much enjoyed our stay at The Bowery. A very beautiful home, extremely tastefully appointed with a gorgeous garden in a great location - based on our experience - we really loved it!
The House was lovely and spacious with great amenities. The Garden was great for the kids. The weather was not so kind, so the house pretty much saved our Holiday. We will definitely book this place again. The host was also great and always got back to us really fast.
