Dog-friendly Beach
Pedn Vounder is known by locals as ‘pednee’, which is how you pronounce the Cornish word ‘pedn’. It means ‘head’ while ‘vounder’ means lane. It could be anywhere, but it isn’t. It is very Cornish!
It was once a hidden secret, but now has become a tourist ‘must see’ spot having featured in the recent TV adaptation of Poldark, used in a dream sequence of “Nampara Cove”.
Therefore, if visiting, get there early. A few words of advice. It is not easy to get to because you have to go down a rugged cliff path to get to the sand (more coasteering than strolling).
It is not an outing for flip flops (trainers or walking shoes needed) or with loads of beach luggage, nor is it ideal for young children or older dogs. You don’t want to be airlifted off it! There are no loos or cafes and you need to check tide times very carefully. It is also an unofficial naturist beach, so be careful with photography. That all said, it is an utterly outstanding location.
This glorious beach, surrounded by steep cliffs, with its crystal clear turquoise waters and white sand, is the eastern end of the bay that is Porthcurno Cove. The surrounding cliffs of Treryn Dinas (or Treen) are topped by a legendary rocking stone, Logan Rock, which can be made to rock by one person alone despite it weighing 80 tons. Worth a try!
The grass car park is 10 minute walk away in Treen or it can be reached at low tide from Porthcurno Beach or 15 minutes via the coast path from there. Parking is more expensive and busier at Porthcurno though.
