Gwithian sits in-between Godrevy and the Towans section of Hayle’s famous three miles of golden sand. Th beach has a bit of everything; curious rockpools, dramatic cliffs with caves, surrounding grassy dunes, but the best bit for us has to be the huge expanse of golden sand. The sunsets can be pretty special too. Here’s everything you need to know…
RNLI lifeguards patrol in season, marking the safest place to swim. This is an exposed Atlantic beach with rip currents, shifting sandbars and a powerful shorebreak on higher tides. Only swim between the red‑and‑yellow flags, keep surf craft to the black‑and‑white zone, and avoid inflatables in offshore winds. Be aware of currents near the river/Gwithian stream and the rocks towards Godrevy.

Gwithian is a renowned beach‑break that picks up plentiful swell, serving peaky, fast waves when the banks align. Intermediates love clean, mid‑tide sessions; novices are best on smaller swells or with a local lesson. The Gwithian Surf Academy is situated to show you the ropes. Bodyboarders enjoy lively sections on a pushing tide. SUP and kayaking are best reserved for calm mornings — launch well away from the flagged swim area and give rocky headlands a wide berth.
Tide tips: Mid to low tide generally offers easier paddle‑outs and acres of space. By high tide the beach pinches in and dumpers can thump — great to watch, less forgiving to ride. On big spring lows, long sands link through to Godrevy and Hayle Towans — always allow time to return before the tide turns.
Gwithian follows Cornwall’s seasonal dog restrictions, 15 May to 30 September, 10am–6pm. Outside those times dogs are welcome; when allowed, keep them under close control among dunes and nesting areas, and tidy up to protect this special habitat.
There are several car parks behind the dunes, The National Trust car park is your best bet. There are public toilets and seasonal showers near key access points. Paths lead through the dunes and over boardwalks; sections of soft sand and slopes mean it’s less suitable for some wheelchairs/buggies. Beach cafés and kiosks serve coffees, ice‑cream and post‑surf fuel within flip‑flop distance of the sand.
From the dunes, the South West Coast Path rolls north to Godrevy Point for lighthouse views and seal‑watching lookouts, or south along the sands towards Hayle for big‑sky beach walks. Short dune loops at sunset are a local favourite.

Beach cafés at Gwithian and Godrevy keep things simple with sea‑view breakfasts, coffee stops and relaxed lunches. A short drive brings you to St Ives for everything from pasties to seafood suppers with harbour views – check out our favourites here, while Hayle adds cafés and delis ideal for picnic supplies.
If the weather turns, head into St Ives for Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, or pop to Paradise Park & JungleBarn in Hayle for indoor play and wildlife encounters. Between squalls, the headland viewpoints at Godrevy deliver moody seascapes and lighthouse drama without committing to the beach.
