About

The aptly named Tintin Cottage is a former tin miner’s home in enviable Carbis Bay, just a mile from St Ives.

Small but perfectly formed, this semi-detached cottage makes for an idyllic Cornish getaway. Sleeping two and full of charm, from the traditional stone finish to the wooden beams and cosy log burner, it’s perfectly set up for a romantic break on the coast.

As you enter the property, you’ll be greeted with its traditional features. There’s a welcoming living room with a sofa and window seat, a fireplace with woodburning stove, and a TV, plus a foldaway wooden table and chairs, for convenience. Adjacent is the separate kitchen, with gorgeous exposed stonework. While it’s compact, there’s everything you need to rustle up a Cornish feast with a gas hob, electric oven, microwave, and fridge.

Upstairs, the bedroom is just as appealing, there’s a double bed, charming fireplace (for decorative purposes), TV and plenty of storage. The shower room is equipped with a freestanding shower, WC, basin and heated towel rail.

Outside you’ll discover a property highlight. Follow some stone steps, to take you to a secluded elevated terrace space which has two levels, both of which gets drenched with Cornish sun and are surrounded by luscious greenery to provide a sheltered hideaway. Wherever you choose to enjoy your Cornish breakfast or evening tipple, both decked spots come with garden furniture for you to kick back and relax.

Located on a traffic-free lane, it’s worth noting that there’s no vehicle access to Tintin cottage. There is however a private parking space which is a steep 200m walk away.

You’re a five-minute walk from the award-winning Carbis Bay beach, which can be conveniently reached from a path directly from the cottage. The location here is fantastic as you’re also just over a mile from hotspot St Ives, with its restaurants, bars, beaches, galleries and more. Your romantic Carbis Bay break awaits…

Activities

When holidaying in Carbis Bay look no further than Carbis Bay Beach. The proud recipient of a Blue Flag award, meaning it is a super-clean beach. Perfect for families with young children, the water is just right for swimming, and usually free of surfers/body boarders. If you prefer to sunbathe and relax, the spotlessly clean beach is around a mile long. With a beautifully clear sea, this fine beach is quiet; wonderful, too, for a sunset walk.

If a spa day is up your street, try the Carbis Bay Hotel’s C Bay Spa, which also has some fantastic eateries if you need to refuel for lunch, or perhaps looking for a romantic dinner out.

Situated two miles from St Ives along the coast path, it’s a wonderful stroll. Or you can hop on the St Ives Bay line at Carbis Bay for a short but pretty train ride. For beach lovers, there are plenty to choose from… Porthmeor Beach, Porthgwidden Beach, Godrevy, Porthkidney Beach to name but a few. Families and couples will enjoy relaxing on the sand or playing in the water. St Ives Surf School offers sessions for surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering. All great fun! If you prefer to stay a little drier though, St Ives Boat Trips run sea-life safaris to see the local dolphins and seals!

One of St Ives most well-known attractions is the Tate St Ives, which is one of only four Tate galleries in the UK and is a haven for lovers of modern art. Artists praise St Ives for its beautiful light and it has inspired many pieces.

The cobbled streets of St Ives are home to many shops, galleries and cafes and most businesses are small independents or artisans. Check out Cornwall Soapbox for handmade soaps and aromatherapy products made in Cornwall!

When visiting St Ives, there are many bars, restaurants and cafes to choose from. Porthminster Kitchen regularly receives great reviews and has a strong focus on fresh local food or head to Blas Burgerworks for a tasty handcrafted burger using ingredients sourced from the area.

St Ives sits at the bottom of the A30, so if you are looking to explore more of the Cornwall coast, then this is a great base and you can book ferries for day trips to the Scilly Isles from Penzance (only a 20 minute drive away).

Our editor’s blog on St Ives shares her favourite ways to spend your time in the jewel in Cornwall’s crown. Read more, here.

The cottage is also incredibly quiet, with only the sound of running water from the stream opposite audible at night. All in all an incredibly peaceful place.

This was absolutely everything we’d been hoping for… a small cottage with a clean, modernised yet characterful interior, within walking distance of a quiet, beautiful beach. The walk down to Carbis Bay through the little valley was such a highlight every morning, and the coastal paths in both directions offered so many sights and walking routes. We don’t drive, but found walking to the supermarket and pub 10 minutes away very convenient.
