Dog-friendly Beach
Despite its strange name, Porthkidney Beach is pretty scenic. Located at Lelant, it is 2 miles from St Ives which tends to be much busier in summer. The beach is huge, clean but has no facilities, as it is off the beaten track. However, it does have wonderful views to St Ives, Carbis Bay and Godrevy lighthouse.
One of Cornwall’s best loved artists, John Miller, lived here. He died in 2002 but Porthkidney beach featured in many of his paintings. By the by, his work also featured on Chris Rea’s album, King of the Beach. Incidentally, Rosamunde Pilcher, the novelist, was also born in Lelant.
Access is a little tricky down a rough track near St Uny Church in Lelant Village, but it is only a short stretch (with steep steps at the bottom) to this peaceful haven. There is not much parking, however, but it is worth the effort to reach this unspoilt, uncrowded gem of a beach with its pure white sand, sheltered spots, and incredibly clear crystal blue waters.
The first section of the beach is carved through by the shallow but fast-flowing River Hayle. The wave-watching is tremendous, and it is a great place for storm-watching, too. A delightful spot. At low tide, you could walk here from St Ives.
