We Review: Private Chef Service M² Catering

We Review: Private Chef Service M² Catering

Date Posted: 6 Apr 2023

Editor Rebecca Moore welcomes Cornwall’s latest private chef services M² Catering, to see how the sisters latest cooking venture sizes up.

It’s not often that the chef cooking in front of your very eyes, last cheffing gig was for the BAFTA awards. But any cooking experience – big or small – private chef duo M² Catering approach the same way; providing a professional service, delivering a creative menu, all with a smile and no-trouble attitude. While there were no red carpets at our tasting evening, the food and service was certainly worthy of winning awards.

The two sisters behind M² Catering, Abi and Nat Mansfield, have clocked up time in the likes of London’s fine dining restaurants, ski chalets in the Alps, and big scale events at the National Gallery to name but a few, but the talented twosome seem to be just at home in our Cornish kitchen.

Launching at the tail end of last year, M² Catering – named after the surname initial of the chef sisters – offers a private chef service across Cornwall and Devon. Having both worked in the food industry for the best part of two decades, the sisters have left London’s food scene for pastures new, and from first bite of my fluffy polenta canapé with crispy garlic, parmesan and basil… I can say we’re happy to have them.

Prior to our tasting evening, we had selected a range of dishes to try, opting for the more relaxed platter-style menu. Giving a Mediterranean-inspired ‘family feast’ set up, the starter board featured hot smoked salmon, cured meats, olives, Spanish tortilla, flat bread, aioli and the most divine smoky baba ghanoush. With our party of eight, this allowed us to graze on delicious fare, tucking into as much as we wanted, and chat at leisure as our chefs prepared the next course.

For the main course we enjoyed prawn and chorizo skewers, smoked pulled pork shoulder and a resounding favourite, beef koftas with creamy tzatziki. The generous sides were spiced braised rice, roasted broccolini and grilled butternut squash with halloumi, with plenty to feed eight mouths.

To round things off, we opted for what became quite the discussion point amongst the group, which we now refer to as the ‘marmite’ dessert. A dark chocolate torte with coconut, chilli and lime. It resulted in mixed views with half of the party devouring it, and the other half tentative to say the least. Chilli and chocolate is a bold move, but one that earned brownie points with my side of the table and demonstrates the creative flavours M² Catering offer.

It’s safe to say Abi and Natalie bring energy, passion and experience to their new gourmet food offering here in Cornwall, even preserving enough steam at the end of service to do the washing up.

The versatility is refreshing, and it’s clear the pair are dedicated to scaling a food experience to meet bespoke requirement, so that Cornish holidays can be enhanced, from plated fine dining to mezze boards and relaxed platters.  And we wish them every success in their new private chef service.
