Attractions in Bude are plentiful. And if you want to immerse yourself in nature you’ve come to the right place. Here you’ll find some of Bude’s best nature spots.

Bude’s Canal Path

Nature lovers will adore Bude’s canal path. Situated to the south of the town centre, along this flat 3 mile loop to nearby village Marhamchurch there’s a plethora of wildlife to be seen. Keep your eyes peeled as you walk by the Canal, Bude Marshes, Petherick’s Mill Local Nature Reserves and the River Neet with many reedbeds, pools and marshy areas.

You’ll often spot a heron, common kingfisher, sedge warbler, reed warbler and little egret among others.

Sealife

Want to get up close and personal with nature in Bude? The beach is calling. What better place to start than discovering what lurks in the many rockpools around Crooklets and Summerleaze beach. On the rocks around the pools you will find a range of gastropods, or sea snails. There are also mussels, barnacles and perhaps some reef-building honeycomb worms at the low tide. Low tide is essential for the best rockpooling opportunities, as this is when all the large pools are exposed. These are the pools with the highest variety of species in.

Crabbing is also a popular activity in Bude and other seaside towns. Grab a bucket, a crabbing line and some bait (bacon, ham or something fishy tends to work well), and head to the end of the canal towards Summerleaze Beach. The river that runs down to the sea is the ideal spot as crabs tend to hangout here, you’ll notice there’s a concrete footbridge over it and probably fellow crab catchers.

Tamar Lakes

Situated 8 miles outside of Bude, Tamar Lakes is a popular spot with walkers, runners, cyclists, families, sailors, bird watchers and anglers, with something for everyone. A designated Nature Reserve, Lower Tamar Lake is the perfect place to engage with nature. Spend a few quiet moments in the bird hide, where you might spot ospreys, sandpipers and cormorants.
