A charming thatched cottage near Perranporth
If chocolate-box charm is what you’re after, then look no further than Tretawny an idyllic thatched cottage in the beautiful village of Bolingey, near Perranporth.
Sleeping six, this dog-friendly semi-detached whitewashed cottage is a heavenly retreat, providing a gorgeous escape for families, friends and couples alike. There are original features at every turn, such as low beamed ceilings, traditional windows and stable doors. You won’t be short of modern touches either, to ensure the most comfortable stay here at Tretawny, from the well-equipped open-plan country kitchen to the master ensuite bedroom.
The elegant design throughout radiates peace and tranquillity. Walk through the front wooden stable door and guests will instantly notice the charming rough white walls, stunning wooden flooring and nooks and crannies. Downstairs is a snug living area which has a sumptuous sofa and two plush armchairs, alongside a wall-mounted smartTV and ‘woodburner effect’ electric stove.
Go through to spacious open-plan kitchen/diner, which is the perfect space to enjoy a Cornish feast, around the large dining table. The country shaker-style kitchen has everything a budding chef could need, with a Belfast sink, induction hob and oven, as well as a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, fridge/freezer, wine cooler and a Nespresso coffee machine.
There’s also an extra living space with a sofa and beanbags, which is often a hit with younger party members, coming with a SmartTV to kick back and relax. There’s an additional downstairs WC, too.
Head upstairs to find three well-appointed bedrooms. The most generous is the master bedroom with a larger-than-king size bed (160cm), TV, and ensuite complete with bath and shower over, and a heated towel rail. The second bedroom can be set up as a super king or twin beds, meanwhile the cute bunk-bed room is a favourite with kids. There’s also an additional shower room upstairs with a heated towel rail.
The outdoor space at Tretawny is equally appealing. There’s a walled garden with grassy lawn, patio and dining table and chairs, and a BBQ for eating al fresco. Conveniently you’ll find an outside tap to wash sandy wetsuits or muddy dogs. And private parking for one car.
Just a mile outside of Perranporth with its wonderful beach, Tretawny is also well located to explore the rest of the dramatic north Cornish coast including Newquay, Padstow and Portreath. You’re also a stone’s throw from The Bolingey Inn, a delightful 17th century traditional Cornish inn.

People love Perranporth for its fabulous immense golden, sandy beach, one of the largest in Cornwall, stretching for over three miles at low tide. High sloping dunes and low cliffs give it a sense of ruggedness, along with rock formations which include an arch, caves and Chapel Rock. There is also a little bathing pool, accessible at low tide. Facilities are close to hand, and the vastness of it makes it feel uncrowded even at the busiest times of the year.
Walkers will delight in this heather-topped section of the South West Coast Path out to St Agnes, which takes in some industrial remains and offers some fine sights. Head out on the easy stroll to Cligga Head, looking out over the famous smuggling cliffs used as cover by the smuggling syndicate here in 1780.
Perranporth actually has a bar on the beach, literally, with its Watering Hole, known for its music gigs, and the Tunes in the Dunes Festival in May, which attracts some class live acts.
If you enjoy golf, try the Perranporth Golf Club course which has a fabulous setting high above the beach with views across the bay. Golfers should be aware of the seven blind drives on this course which may challenge some players.
You’re 8 miles from the National Trust’s Elizabethan manor house Trerice, or from Tretawny why not head to the home of the famous Cornish Rattler, Healey’s Cyder Farm? It’s just over two miles away, or if ice cream is more for you, then Callestick Farm is right next door.
You’re only 8 miles from surfing mecca Newquay, with its wonderful bays and relaxed beachside vibe.
