A charming romantic hideaway with a hot tub and sauna

In the luscious valley of Lamorna, a tumbling stream makes its way to the sea through a dense tangle of twisted trees and stunning wildlife. Hidden away in the trees, you’ll find the beautiful and sympathetically restored romantic hideaway, Birch Studio.

Sat on the pools of the stream, the gentle trickle of water and splash of brown trout wash away any remnants of city living. Inside an abundance of natural light and earthy colours combine to create a calming self-catering escape in this quaint little village.

Former home to famous artist Samuel John Lamorna Birch, RA RWS (1869 – 1955) you can still find his oil paint dabbed around the original oak door frame.

Birch Studio sleeps two adults and up to two children (on sofa bed). In the bedroom there’s a king size bed, hanging space and a dressing table. The luxurious freestanding shower features in the bedroom, while the WC has a room of its own.

The bright open-plan kitchen/diner/living space, with its high vaulted ceilings, features a well-equipped contemporary kitchen, a wooden dining table seating four, a woodburning stove, and large smartTV.

After a day exploring the Cornish coast, retreat to the hot tub and sauna, or spend an hour or two watching kingfishers dip around the stream, with a glass of wine perched on the side, before hunkering down back inside on the sofa. There is also a cosy mezzanine floor with a couple of chairs to create a relaxing reading area.

Although immersed in privacy and soaring trees, you are within easy reach of the beach, and local pub The Wink, which are only a two-minute stroll away. The nearby picturesque fishing towns of Mousehole, and Newlyn are only five minutes away by car.

When a need for an escape comes calling, this reclaimed self-catering artist’s hideout is the peaceful retreat you’ve been searching for.

Walk the coast path (approx. 3.5 miles) to quintessentially Cornish Mousehole. A photographer’s dream, so get your camera out and start snapping. With its maze of quaint streets, and picturesque harbour, it is wonderful just strolling around seeking out views of hidden coves, and enjoying the labyrinth of pretty buildings.

Birch Studio is just 3 miles from Newlyn’s fishing harbour, which is wonderful for art lovers and foodies alike. Visit the renowned Newlyn Art Gallery, for the light here is an artist’s dream. This gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west for more than 125 years. Presenting contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a supporting programme of events for all ages. The Exchange is its sister site, which is a contemporary arts space with glass running the length of its façade is also worthy of your attention.

If finding a good restaurant is more your thing, Newlyn delivers on this front too. Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar is open from 12-9 pm every day, while it doesn’t take bookings we believe it’s well worth queuing for. The tasting plates are great for lunchtime grazing, and as to be expected there’s a big fish focus. Ben Tunnicliffe took over The Tolcarne Inn in 2012 and is known as a bit of a champion when it comes to Cornwall’s food scene since settling here in 2001. For a traditional village pub, it’s hard to beat. The chalkboard-style menu heavily favours the sea, with mackerel, scallops, crab, mussels, bass and bream often featured. Or if you’ve a sweet tooth, Mr Porter’s journal named Jelberts the best ice cream in England. This rather unassuming ice cream shop offers just one flavour… vanilla. Make sure you get clotted cream on top.

Penzance is a 15 mile drive away, walk along the promenade and head for the famous Jubilee Pool, the UK’s largest art deco seawater lido. Meanwhile Porthcurno is just 7 miles away, with its sandy beach and iconic open-air Minack Theatre.
