Located 2 miles from Falmouth, beautiful east-facing Maenporth Beach is a beautiful sandy cove with a gently sloping beach. Shallow water and rockpools mean children love it. Very sheltered and unaffected by Atlantic swell, a saltwater stream runs through the beach for easy paddling and dam building for young children when the tide is out. Here’s everything you need to know…

MAENPORTH WEATHER

Beach Overview

Tucked two miles from Falmouth, Maenporth is a gently shelving cove with soft sand, sheltered by low headlands and looking straight across Falmouth Bay towards Pendennis Castle and St Anthony Head. On calm days it’s a classic south‑coast beach: safe, shallow paddling for little ones, sun‑warmed rock ledges for crabbing, and easy access from the beachfront car park. The atmosphere is relaxed and local—morning dippers, SUPs gliding past the moorings, and families spreading out across firm sand at lower tides.

Lifeguards & Safety

Maenporth is not routinely RNLI‑lifeguarded. Safety signage warns of strong currents and the risk of being cut off by the tide near the headlands, so be extra vigilant.

Surf & Watersports

You’ll come here more for swimming, SUP and kayaking than for surfing. The south‑coast aspect keeps conditions calmer than the north coast, which makes Maenporth a favourite for paddle‑boarders and sea kayaks when winds are light. Falmouth Surf School & Watersports operates right on the beach with lessons and hire, making it easy to try something new without hauling kit. Launch away from other water users and stay well clear of rock ledges at either end of the bay.

Tide tips: At mid to low tide there’s more dry sand for base‑camps and shoreline play; at high tide the beach narrows against the promenade and the shorebreak can become punchier on spring highs. If a groundswell wraps in, longboarders and bodyboarders sometimes find playful peaks, but for consistent surf most riders head north to Gwithian or Porthtowan.

Dog Rules

Maenporth has a seasonal dog restriction under Cornwall’s PSPO  (dogs are not permitted between 1 July to 31 August, 10- 6pm). Outside those times, dogs are welcome — please keep them under close control and clear up after them.

Facilities & Accessibility

Everything is right on the sand. There’s fee‑paying parking beside the beach, public toilets with accessible facilities, and a friendly beach café for coffees, ice‑cream and simple lunches (with seasonal opening hours). Access is straightforward via level paths and ramps from the car park, making it one of the easier beaches in the area for buggies and wheelchairs.

Coast path & nearby walks

From Maenporth the South West Coast Path rolls in both directions. A gentle seafront stroll north reaches Swanpool (and on to Gyllyngvase) with near‑constant sea views. Southbound the path rounds Rosemullion Head towards Durgan and Helford Passage, threading past subtropical gardens and hidden coves — perfect for a longer day out with picnic stops.

Places to eat nearby

Right above the sand, Life’s A Beach Café keeps things casual with coffee, pastries and beach‑day bites. For something special, The Cove at Maenporth sits on the headland with sweeping views and a refined menu—perfect for long lunches or sundowners after a swim. Back in Falmouth, the harbour streets are packed with cafés, bakeries and pubs for every mood.

Rainy‑day options

If the weather turns, head into Falmouth for the National Maritime Museum Cornwall — hands‑on galleries and tall‑ship views that work brilliantly in all weathers. Alternatively, Pendennis Castle mixes atmospheric indoor exhibits with dramatic sea vistas between showers.
