About

The aptly-named Salubrious House once attracted some noteworthy guests, especially artists, such as potter, Bernard Leach, sculptor, Barbara Hepworth and painter, Ben Nicholson, for it was the perfect party house.  Built in 1812 for the local Mayor, its laidback coastal vibes, alluring history and fabulous Regency charm can only promote your sense of wellbeing.  This is somewhere very special indeed, an oasis of calm in one of Cornwall’s most popular locations, with its colourful artistic history, a place central to the St Ives colony of artists.

This gleaming white building houses a beautifully spacious family home, right in the centre of St Ives, built on land separating the harbour from Porthmeor Beach, affording outstanding views from every window.

From here, take in the harbour, Porthminster, Godrevy Lighthouse (inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s novel) and the gorgeous sweep of St Ives Bay, letting the creativity of this wondrous place seep into your soul.  Artist, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, even created an illustration from the first-floor window of this mesmerising house in 1968.

The property was renovated and refurbished by the owners to retain its character and style while creating the luxury quality of a special beach property suitable for all seasons, making the most of the wonderful light-quality of St Ives.  Bleached wood, natural linens, varied textures, and stylish furnishings, accented with gold, create a homely feel styled to capture a sense of the past.  Reverse-level accommodation makes the most of the awesome views.

High standard, tasteful décor completes the lavish picture: luxurious beds, comfy sofas, relaxing family bathroom, and a log burner are all features which make this a delightful stay to remember for all the right reasons.  The huge first-floor open-plan kitchen/dining/living area is a truly sociable hub with a bespoke dining table and spectacular views, plus masses of the renowned St Ives light pouring through the huge bay windows.  An elegant kitchen and seating area complete the vision.

On the top floor, you will find the family bedroom incorporating the Crow’s Nest, the lookout for the ship owner who would watch his ships at sea and coming in to dock at the harbour.  This gives you amazing views over St Ives Bay, providing a fabulous family space. (Please note there are steep stairs to the family bedroom).

The other three large bedrooms are themed. Is your choice going to be the bright and breezy master bedroom with a king-sized cane bed?  Or coastal décor with a huge granite fireplace?  Or do you enjoy a ‘New England’ feel? Meanwhile, the luxurious family bathroom is tropical with a feature wall, and an abundance of leafy plants, a claw-foot bath for an opulent soak, and a large walk in refreshing shower.

In the garden sits a studio steeped in artistic history, providing a wonderful ‘beach hut retreat’ library/reading room with a comfy sofa and wood burner, ideal if you have some work to do.  This was Douglas Portway’s art studio, so maybe it could be yours, too. Don’t forget your watercolours!

Facilities

High-quality bed linen and towels are provided at all of Cornish Secrets properties.
Where a cot is supplied, guests are kindly asked to bring their own cot bedding.

Ground Floor

Master Bedroom with Ensuite

Bright and Breezy with shimmering mother of pearl furniture and art, a cane king size bed with crisp white linens makes this room feel calm and welcoming.  With views through the large bay windows across the gardens and rooftops directly to the sea.  Leading off the main bedroom is the en-suite with iconic tiled floor and huge walk in shower.

Bedroom Two

The huge original granite fireplace takes centre stage, softened by textured wallpaper and bleached wood furniture. The king size bed continues the textured coastal decor. Another huge bay window offers the same entrancing views as the master bedroom.

Bedroom Three

A versatile cheerful room with zip and link beds to allow twin beds or super king options. The painted wood panelling and textured wallpaper, painted shutters and bleached wood furniture give this room a real ‘New England’ feel

TV Room

An additional TV room is positioned at the centre of the ground floor as a great place for guests to escape, undisturbed, to watch the Samsung Smart TV with Netflix  & Sky sports or play on the X Box One S.

Family Bathroom

Experience a ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ when entering the family bathroom. A Tropical feature wall, an abundance of leafy plants and accessories makes for a cheery mood. The large walk in shower and original claw foot bath offer you the perfect choice of bathing.

First Floor

Kitchen / Dining / Living Room

You couldn’t dream of a more stunning room, with light and views from two huge bay windows, a real social space, where everyone can cook, eat and relax together.  Ancient Elm antique flooring features across the entire area.  The bespoke dining table made from pippy oak with a river of white resin which mirrors the kitchen units, with antique gold tiles and features.

With polished marble work tops, the kitchen offers a deluxe induction range cooker, integrated fridge freezer, integrated dishwasher and most importantly a wine cooler fridge.  A Tassimo coffee machine is also provided.

The sitting room area provides two huge 4 seater leather sofas and cane armchairs have been placed in each bay window to drink in the views.  A wood-burner is central to this area to take off the chill in winter months.

Large French windows lead to the first floor terrace from the dining area, where guests can sip a cocktail and re-enact the St Ives artist colony party scene before sitting down to dinner, or perhaps fire up the charcoal BBQ and dine al fresco at the 8 seater outdoor dining table.

Cloakroom / Utility Room/ Shower Room

Leading from the open plan living space is an inner hallway, with a staircase leading to bedroom 4 (Crow’s Nest) and a cloakroom area, then leading to a separate WC and a practical utility / shower room with a vintage style tiled floor and window shutters, making this a fresh and stylish room. A large walk in shower provides private facilities for the family suite above.  Hidden behind bespoke doors is a utility area, including a washing machine, tumble dryer and sink unit.

Top Floor - The Crow's Nest

The top floor provides a suite of rooms with families in mind. A separate walk in wardrobe, dressing room with super size chest of drawers and family bedroom, with a king size bed and a further single bed tucked under the eaves makes this area feel like a penthouse suite.  (Please note there are steep stairs to the Crow’s Nest)

Exterior

The first floor terrace offers spectacular views and provides the outside dining area, with cast iron table and chairs for 8 guests along with a charcoal BBQ.  Access to the first floor kitchen / dining/ sitting room through double French doors.

The huge slate garden level terrace is raised above the gardens and is wrapped with a glass balcony, with steps leading down to the garden and the studio with all areas offering outstanding sea views. Further steps from the garden level terrace lead to the garden gate, which in turn leads down to Fore Street in just a couple of minutes.

The Studio

The separate studio in the garden provides an extra special beach hut style retreat.  Open the bi-folding doors across the width and allow the outside to come in, whilst you relax on the comfy sofa with a book chosen from the library.  There is a small kitchen area with a fridge to chill the wine and a wet room to wash off sand after a day on the beach.  If the weather is cold, then a cast iron electric wood-burner gives instant heat.

Parking

Due to its incredible location in the heart of St.Ives, there is a very short walk of approximately 50 metres between Salubrious House and the two private parking spaces. There are steps around the internal and external areas of the property.  The property can only be accessed by the pedestrian path.

Activities

St Ives is located in West Cornwall. There is plenty to do in St Ives and it is a fantastic location if you plan on exploring a little further afield too.

For beach lovers, there are plenty to choose from… Porthmeor Beach, Porthgwidden Beach, Godrevy, Porthkidney Beach or Carbis Bay to name but a few. Families and couples will enjoy relaxing on the sand or playing in the water. St Ives Surf School offers sessions for surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering. All great fun! If you prefer to stay a little drier though, St Ives Boat Trips run sea-life safaris to see the local dolphins and seals!

One of St Ives most well-known attractions is the Tate St Ives, which is one of only four Tate galleries in the UK and is a haven for lovers of modern art. Artists praise St Ives for its beautiful light and it has inspired many pieces.

The cobbled streets of St Ives are home to many shops, galleries and cafes and most businesses are small independents or artisans. Check out Cornwall Soapbox for handmade soaps and aromatherapy products made in Cornwall!

When visiting St Ives, there are many bars, restaurants and cafes to choose from. Porthminster Kitchen regularly receives great reviews and has a strong focus on fresh local food or head to Blas Burgerworks for a tasty handcrafted burger using ingredients sourced from the area.

St Ives sits at the bottom of the A30, so if you are looking to explore more of the Cornwall coast, then this is a great base and you can book ferries for day trips to the Scilly Isles from Penzance (only a 20 minute drive away).

We will be back!

We loved this house – perfect for a family holiday based in St Ives. The house is located very centrally, with easy walking distance to the 4 town beaches and the shops/bars. The house itself is great for entertaining (we recommend the Cornish Chef for a special Dinner Party in your own home) and the views over the town and harbour are sublime. There is ample private parking for 2 large cars, although we didn’t move our cars all week – that is how good the location is! A perfect location, a house that is truly ‘salubrious’ are all the ingredients for a memorable holiday. Cornish Secrets were excellent hosts and were on hand with all the information and support as we required it.

A truly wonderful home with so many beautiful areas within the house to explore. There is something for everyone, you could never be bored. We recommend going to St Ives Bakery for your morning breakfast (the pastries are amazing), have dinner at the beach cafes (the views are stunning) and have a cosy evening at home with the family (you have to try the bath!).
