A sophisticated countryside retreat
Polkanugga Farm nestles in glorious countryside between the picturesque fishing village of Coverack and the River Helford, also located near to the pretty village of Porthallow, with its backdrop of woodland scenery and thatched cottages. Heaven on earth.
The dramatic Lizard coastline here is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located in a traditional farm courtyard at the end of a tarmac track, stables on a 12-acre smallholding have been converted to create two exquisitely comfortable holiday rentals.
This tranquil location, in a lesser known area of Cornwall, is a wonderful spot to wildlife-watch, while also enjoying easy access to entertainment, food and adventure farther afield.
This sophisticated new build is close to a traditional farmhouse. Uniquely stylish, with king-sized bedrooms, it is perfect for 4 people.
Ensuite, freshly-tiled bathrooms add to its allure, with bath and shower options.
An open-plan, well-equipped contemporary kitchen leads on to the lounge, with its polished serpentine floors and snug underfloor heating. A modern woodburner also belts out heat in the cooler months. Superfast WiFi is provided. If hired with Swallows Rest, then you have a perfect holiday destination for a larger group.
Outside is just as impressive. Here, you will find a continental-feel outdoor kitchen and shower, 12 acres of fields and a stream with a bluebell wood, which is a carpet of blue in spring, and still beautiful throughout the year. Parking is ample.
A private hot tub is also available, along with a wood-fired pizza oven for the best homemade pizzas. Other facilities, shared with Swallows Rest, include a separate games room for table tennis and table football to embrace your competitive spirit as you spend time together. Your well-behaved dog is also welcome.
Nearby, check out all that the Lizard has to offer, with dramatic cliffs, Mullion with its harbour for superb sunsets, and the National Trust’s beautiful Kynance Cove, one of the most photographed coves in Cornwall.
Traditional fishing villages include Coverack and Cadgwith. Gardens, such as Trebah and Glendurgan are also across the River Helford (there is a ferry). This is also a brilliant area for watersports, such as kayaking. Here, you can choose to stay not stray, and enjoy a truly relaxing time on the Lizard Peninsula; alternatively, it makes a perfect base to explain other places of interest such as St Ives, Gwithian or the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
If you’re feeling a little more active, why not bring your bikes or enroll on a scuba diving course at Porthkerris? If you prefer to stay above the water take surfing lessons at Dan Joel’s Surf school at Poldhu and combine with a days kayaking with Lizard Adventures. Or if you fancy a day walking the South West Coast path make sure you save time for a pint at Porthallow’s The Five Pilchards and a cream tea Fat Apples Cafe.
For more food for thought there’s lots of choice nearby, why not try the foraging menu at the Michelin star New Yard restaurant at Trelowarren? Or The Green House in nearby St Keverne? Further afield spend an evening exploring the harbour town of Porthleven and try one of the renowned fish restaurants.
