The pretty seaside village of Downderry was once noted by the Sunday Times as one of the best place to live by the sea. Situated in the southeast, coastal village Downderry is flanked by two steep hills, 1 mile to the west sits Seaton and to the east you’ll find Portwrinkle, just 3 miles away.
Great for families, Downderry Beach is a mix of sand and shingle. If you happen to be visiting when there’s a southerly swell and the winds are right, Downderry Beach is a great place to ride the waves, it’s much less populated than some of the nearby beaches but a hit with local surfers (always a good sign!).
Downderry’s sister beach Seaton is just a five minute stroll away. At low tide it is possible to walk to Seaton across the mile long narrow stretch of sand, but do bear in mind this is tide dependent so you’ll need to check the tides times. Seaton also has a Countryside Park with riverside and woodland walks, so there’s plenty to see and do. This coast is also home to many more bays including Talland, while Millendreath and Tregantle Beach and the numerous sandy coves at Whitsand Bay are less than 15 minute drive away.
For filling your tummies you have plenty of options too. Look out to sea whilst enjoying our delicious food and drink at dog-friendly pub Inn on the Shore, or for tasty meat-free meals and tasty coffee, Summink Different Vegetarian Café is worth a visit, or check out Blue Plate Bistro which is at the heart of the village. If you’re in Seaton, The Smugglers Inn is a traditional local dog-friendly pub serving hearty pub classics and seasonal dishes, plus they also operate the Smugglers Shack for grab-and-go snacks and cold/hot drinks, so you can maximise your time on the beach.
History buffs should head inland to the village of St Germans, which is less than 15 minute drive away from Downderry and located on the River Tiddy. It’s home to Port Eliot House and Gardens, a stunning Grade-I listed priory and house, which was remodelled by Sir John Soane in the 18th century. Or, the bustling fishing town Looe is just 6 miles away, situated on the south coast of Cornwall. It is divided into South Looe and East Looe by the River Looe, connected by a bridge for vehicle and foot traffic.
Your Downderry cottage is a great base from which to get to know this stunning part of Cornwall.
