Originally built in the 1700s to export copper and import coal, Charlestown is truly special, and a visit to the harbour feels like stepping back in time. Along harbour there’s fabulous places to eat out with your dog and there are some epic spots to go walkies.
Charlestown has great access to the South West Coast path and dogs are welcomed along the whole stretch (that’s a mega 640 miles), providing they are always kept in sight; away from cliff edges, and on a lead around livestock. Almost all of the restaurants and pubs down by the harbour are happy to welcome your dog, too.
Our dog-friendly cottages in Charlestown will ensure the best holiday for everyone. Most popular options for canines and their owners include The Old Smokehouse, which is located in the heart of Charlestown and a three-minute stroll to the South West Coast Path. Up to two dogs can stay at Orchard Cottage, which has generous gardens for dogs to enjoy.
A popular walk with your dog has to be on the coast path towards Mevagissey. This scenic cliff trail takes you towards Pentewan Village, Black Head and Porthpean. Not the easiest walk but superb views and a brilliant way to burn off some of your dog’s energy. Or if you are looking for a sandy beach to take your dog, away from the crowds then Hemmick Beach is off the beaten track with fairly steep access, but well worth a visit from nearby Charlestown.
For a traditional Cornish pub, try The Rashleigh Arms who are very happy to host you and your dog. It’s a beautiful traditional Cornish pub just before you reach the harbour, and your pooch can even be treated to a pint of its dog beer, Proper Dog!
