While Cornwall may be on the sleepy side, as a county we’re not as behind as people may think and are very welcoming of a greener future and more sustainable holidays.
According to Zap Map, at the end of the July 2024, there were more than 1.2 million plug-in vehicles. In the UK there are now over 66,000 charge point connectors, in more than 39,000 locations. As a number, that equates to more public places to charge than petrol stations. Given that our county is wonderfully spread out, it’s worth preparing ahead if you’re considering a Cornish holiday or travelling in the Duchy with an electric car.
You will of course find more charging points in built-up areas and cities, but like the rest of the country, Cornwall’s electric car charging points continue to grow. 2024 has seen a huge increase in Cornwall thanks to the Drive EV2 Project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Cornwall Council. The project has delivered 226 new charging points through 93 fast and 20 charging units, bringing the total number of charging units across Cornwall to more than 500. The charge points have been installed in Cornwall Council car parks in 42 locations, improving the availability of EV charging points in Cornwall.
There are now four different types of chargers; slow, fast, rapid and ultra-rapid. A slow charge (3-6kW) will typically take between 6-12 hours, a fast charge (7kW or 22kW) is around 4-6 hours for 7kW and 1-2 hours for 22kW. At Cornwall Council Car Parks you are most likely to find a 7kW public EV charger.
A rapid charge can typically charge an EV car to 80 per cent in about 30 minutes, while an ultra-rapid is said to take as little as 10-20minutes, but it also depends on the car itself.
Tesla Superchargers are known for speedy charging, charging at 250kW. In Cornwall, currently you’ll find a Tesla Supercharger at Kingsley Village in Penhale and Cambourne.
