Lifeguarded Beach
Dog-friendly Beach
Planning the trip this guide inspired?
Tregantle Beach is Whitsand Bay at its wildest: a long, spacious sweep of sand backed by dramatic cliffs and open Atlantic views. It’s great for big low-tide walks, surf and bodyboarding on the right day, and peaceful dog-friendly wanders away from the busier access points.
Tregantle Beach is the wilder, quieter western end of Whitsand Bay: a long, sweeping strand backed by steep cliffs and big Atlantic views. It feels more remote than the main Whitsand access points, but it still delivers that classic “miles of sand” feeling at low tide, with plenty of space for long walks and a properly open-coast atmosphere. The key thing that makes Tregantle unique is that it sits below the MOD training area at Tregantle Fort, so access is sometimes restricted.
Tregantle is lifeguarded by the RNLI in season, but as always, only swim or bodyboard between the red and yellow flags when they’re up, and assume there is no lifeguard service outside patrol hours.

Safety at Tregantle comes with two extra must-knows. First, Whitsand Bay can have rip currents, and the cliffs are known for instability and occasional rockfall, so avoid sitting right under cliff faces and keep an eye on the sea state. Second, the beach can be closed when the firing ranges are in use. Red flags or lights mean no entry, regardless of any published firing timetable.
Tregantle is popular with surfers when conditions line up, and it can be great for bodyboarding too. Because it’s open to the Atlantic, it can feel powerful and fast-changing, so it’s best suited to confident sea users on bigger days. If you’re going in the water, stick to the patrolled zone during lifeguard season and be conservative if you’re seeing rips or heavy shorebreak.
Tregantle is dog-friendly all year round, making it a strong option if you’re visiting with a dog in peak season. The main thing to be aware of is access: if the MOD range is active and the beach is closed, you’ll need to choose a different access point elsewhere along Whitsand Bay. On open days, follow any signage on arrival, keep dogs under close control near cliff edges and in strong surf, and always clean up after them.
This is a “bring what you need” beach. Facilities on the sand are very limited and there aren’t reliable public toilets right by Tregantle itself, so it’s best to plan ahead. Parking is available at a long-stay car park serving this end of the bay, and from there access down to the beach is steep and not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Even if the descent feels manageable, the climb back up can be a workout, so good footwear and packing light make the day much easier.
The South West Coast Path runs along the clifftops above Whitsand Bay, and Tregantle is a brilliant place to combine beach time with a dramatic coastal wander. If you time the tide well, you can also do long sand-level walks along the bay, but it’s important to keep an eye on the tide and avoid being cut off as the water pushes in.
For a proper sit-down meal after a windy beach walk, Inn on the Shore in Downderry is a great nearby choice. If you’re staying on the Whitsand Bay side, there are also cafés around the Tregonhawke area that work well for a quicker warm-up stop and something simple.
If it’s raining, Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (near Cremyll/Torpoint) is a reliable “save the day” plan. Even in showery weather it’s great for a woodland-and-views wander between downpours, and there are on-site facilities when you need a proper warm-up.
