Towan Beach is Newquay’s easy, everything-on-the-doorstep beach: a sandy town bay beside the harbour with a lively seaside buzz and loads of nearby cafés, shops and facilities. It’s a great choice for relaxed swims and paddles, with seasonal RNLI lifeguards, plus an easy coastal stroll in either direction. Bring the dog too — Towan is generally dog-friendly year-round — and if the weather turns, you’ve got indoor options just minutes away.
Towan Beach is Newquay’s classic town beach: a flat, sandy stretch right beside the harbour, with everything close at hand and a lively holiday feel in summer. Because it sits in a more sheltered position than some of Newquay’s more exposed beaches, it often feels a little calmer, and it’s an easy choice if you want a beach you can dip in and out of without a big trek.
Towan Beach is well lifeguarded by the RNLI. One Towan-specific detail is that surfing is not permitted during the summer season while lifeguards are on duty, so during those hours it’s best treated as a swim-and-family beach. As always, swim between the red and yellow flags when they’re up and keep a close eye on children, particularly around changing tide lines and deeper channels.
Towan Beach Newquay Lifeguard Patrol Dates 2026
Patrol times 10am – 6pm
Towan is more about swimming, paddling and easy sea dips than it is about regular surf. It’s relatively sheltered from most Atlantic swell and only tends to see surf in stormier conditions, and during the summer lifeguard period surfing isn’t permitted while lifeguards are on duty. If you’re after a proper surf session, Newquay’s more open beaches are usually the better bet, then Towan becomes a great place to come back for a calmer paddle and an ice cream afterwards.
Towan Beach is dog-friendly all year round. The only thing to watch is local signage at the beach entrance, as landowners can occasionally post their own rules. In practice, dogs are welcome on the sand year-round — just keep them under control, especially in busy summer crowds, and always clean up after them.
This is one of Newquay’s easiest beaches for convenience. You’re right in town with plenty of nearby places for supplies, toilets, and food, and the promenade setting makes it feel more accessible than many of Cornwall’s steeper coves. The nearest option is Towan Headland Car Park (Long Stay), up on the headland above Towan/harbour, with a short walk down to the beach.
Beach wheelchairs are also available for Towan Beach, you can hire one via Blue Reef Aquarium as they manage the Towan chair hire. It’s also a handy option if your group includes people who want different “intensity levels” in the day, because it’s easy for some to stay on the level seafront while others head down to the sand. As with any town beach, summer days can be busy, so arriving earlier often makes everything feel calmer.
Towan is perfect for pairing beach time with a walk. You can do a simple harbour loop for boats, views and people-watching, or head out to the surrounding headlands for that classic Newquay coastline feel. Even a short stroll either way gives you big sea views and plenty of vantage points to watch the waves, and it’s an easy one to fit around tide times or a lunch booking.
A great nearby food stop is The Boathouse at Newquay Harbour, which is ideal for an informal seaside lunch with plenty of choice. It’s close enough to feel effortless after a beach session and works well for families and groups, especially when you want something relaxed and flexible rather than a formal sit-down meal.
If the weather turns, Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay is an easy “save the day” option because it’s close to Towan Beach. It’s indoors, family-friendly, and works brilliantly when you want to stay in the centre of town without committing to a long drive in the rain.
