The Hidden Hut, Porthcurnick Beach

Date Posted: 17 Sep 2024

This place really is quite something. Tucked away on the beautifully remote Roseland Peninsula, The Hidden Hut sits at the secluded Porthcurnick Beach along the south west coast path, near Portscatho.

This hidden shack, built before the War, has become one of the hottest destinations in the county, lauded by Dawn French, and national newspapers/magazines. All food is takeaway (to the beach or coast path) but there is outdoor seating, too.

The outdoor beach kitchen serves unforgettable seasonal lunches, such as beach salads and grilled fish in spring/summer, replaced by chowders, soups and spiced dhals in autumn/winter.

This place offers no space for a deep-fat fryer (hooray) just an outdoor stove and indoor bakery oven, for home-made sausage rolls and pasties, or perhaps fresh hummus and flatbread.

Refreshing cold drinks to buy and free water bottle refills are available; plus, there’s always home-made cakes and very local ice cream. At night, on selected evenings, opt for open-air feast nights, ‘bring your own plate’ (and cutlery and wine) affairs (feels very rural French) showcasing local produce outdoors over wood or charcoal. Entry is by advance ticket only.

Or try an early morning Beach Breakfast, similar to a Feast Night, for a spectacular start to your day.
