Tucked away down on the south coast of Cornwall, in what has been called “Cornwall’s forgotten corner” sits Portwrinkle.

Here, you will find two beaches. One is known as Hoodny Cove, sitting pretty at the western end of the huge expanse that is Whitsand Bay. The sand/shingle crescent of beach has excellent water quality and is tucked away under high verdant grassy cliffs.

The east beach, Finnygook (such a quirky name) is easier to reach, closer to the car park, and excellent for surfing (for experienced surfers) whereas Hoodny Cove is preferred more by families. There are steep paths down, though, which is perhaps why the remote, secluded beach is so calm, a real haven/escape.

On Hoodny cove’s west-facing beach, you will find fine, golden sand/shingle with a ridge of rocks, so the best of both worlds awaits, for sunbathing, rockpools just perfect for exploring; and as the tide comes in, for a spot of super snorkelling in the clear water.

Always check tide times before going to the beach, and any local beach safety signs. If you want somewhere a little more on the beaten track/lifeguarded, try Whitsand, a mere two miles away.

Portwinkle was traditionally a pilchard fishing village. The village itself has no shops which helps retain its seclusion, though there is a beach car park café. The nearby village of Crafthole has a shop and post office.
