We Review: Electric Bakery Bude

Editor Rebecca Moore shares one way to make sure your Saturday lunch in Cornwall, is a tasty one

Every Saturday, between the hours of 11am and 2pm, you’ll find a flock of hungry inhabitants hankering for Al’s latest special at Electric Bakery in Bude, north Cornwall. Al is short for Alex Bluett, Electric Bakery’s chef and forager. He and his talented team are responsible for serving slap-up specials every Saturday from their much-loved bakery.

As a child, Alex grew up on a Cornish farm next to the sea, which of course allowed him access to the very best food. After spending 15 years working his way around kitchens in both Bristol and Cardiff, he is now a chef back in his hometown.

There’s a lot of hype around the Saturday Specials, and for good reason. Selling out week in, week out.

Everything is made from scratch, from the Challah bun, to the wild garlic tzatziki, whatever you choose to eat will be locally sourced. Electric Bakery work with producers who share the same ethos… slow and sustainable food, allowing them to create a menu led by the seasons.

So, what can you expect to see on the weekend menu? The beauty of this Saturday pop-up is that every week is something new and exciting, costing you ten pounds. From Korean fried chicken with kimchi fried rice, to BBQ beef brisket in a bun, a lot of thought goes into the flavour combinations and the results are truly delicious. But what about vegetarians? Meat free is well covered too, as there’s also a punchy vegetarian option every week. Previous veg specials have included buttermilk fried cauliflower and broad bean falafel topped flatbreads.

The flavoursome fare is served in a recyclable cardboard box, you may want to take it away and eat in on the nearby canal or one of Bude’s stunning beaches. Or you might want to demolish it on one of the benches outside. I’ve done all of the above, and if the weather’s not playing ball, I’ve been known to drive to Widemouth Bay’s lookout and eat it from the comfort of the car.

Keep an eye on Electric Bakery’s Instagram for all the scoop on upcoming specials, but think fast and get your order in. When food taste this good, preparation is key.

Oh, and grab yourself a donut too. They’re ridiculously good.
