After leaving Cornwall and travelling the world for a few years, when Grace Davenport returned to her home town of Bude she wasn’t sure what route to take with her career. One thing she did know, was that she wanted to work with dogs. Knowing the local area well, Grace knew there was a big gap in the market for personal pet services. Five years ago she set up Coastal Canines South West, taking off from the get go.
We caught up with Grace to get the inside scoop on why Cornwall is a doggy paradise.
Favourite place for a dog walk in Cornwall?
Now that’s very tough… I think it’d have to be Rocky Valley in Boscastle, it’s a hidden gem.
Best beach for a stroll?
I’m going to have to stick to my home town for this one. Spring low tide the coast path from Bude to Sandymouth is an incredible beach stroll, and I’m thankful to call it my “office”!
Can you recommend any dog-friendly eateries?
We are really lucky here in Cornwall, as there are so many dog-friendly places! We’re spoilt with dog-friendly cafes and restaurants. My personal favourite – which is a real treat – has to be The Mariners pub in Rock.
What services can you offer to people visiting Cornwall on holiday?
While a lot of my clients are local, for those visiting the area there’s services I can offer too. For example, if you’re staying somewhere that’s not suitable for dogs, I offer dog boarding. This way your dog gets to have their own Cornish holiday, making lots of other four-legged friends too while they come and stay with me at my house, all fully licensed by the council. I also offer doggy day care, so if guests want to go somewhere for the day without their furry companion for the day, they can come and hang out with me!
Any advice for those bringing their dog with them to Cornwall?
Cornwall is a wonderful place for dogs, but one important piece of advice, please keep your dogs on a lead on the coast path.
Favourite thing about your job?
Being outside all day… rain or shine! My job keeps me fit, healthy and surrounded by dogs, and they never fail to make me laugh!
