Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay

Date Posted: 24 Jun 2020

Located on Towan Beach, directly below Newquay town centre, watching the sea life at the Blue Reef Aquarium is an awesome way to spend a less sunny day.

Without even going near a boat, you can explore 40 naturally-themed habitats from the Cornish coast to exotic seas in the aquarium.

You will come face to face with freshwater turtles, and even find some captivatingly cute sharks. Yes, really! Who knew octopuses were intelligent? Find out more at this wonderful attraction.

The centrepiece of the aquarium is of course the glass tunnel. This is the tropical coral reef section with angelfish, pufferfish and all sorts of other brightly coloured and venomous species. From colourful corals to crustaceans, you will see all manner of creatures that inhabit the oceans. Use your imagination to feel you are in the sea.

Of course, there are plenty of other ‘fish in the sea’ and some who aren’t fish at all. The Aquarium helps with rescues and rehabilitation, so you can see dwarf caiman crocodiles originating from the Amazon rainforests and now under threat. Or seek out the amazing loggerhead turtles, including their oldest resident, Omiros, at least 45 years old, blind and weighing 100kg. He’s awesome.

There are daily events of talks and feeding times but you can also take a pit stop at the café, and treat yourself in the shop.
